The Deathless Pros - Five Stop Mother Superior Rain

The show just keeps on keepin' on, every new band leaves a new impression on the direction and diversity of the Utah music scene, that is to say I sawr it.

Last night The Deathless Pros kicked in the studio door and pasted the walls black and blue. They've got a show coming up in January on the 23rd and you don't want to miss it, I saw them at SLUG Localized earlier this month it was rocktastic.

If you missed last nights show you can click on the link for your area and to listen to or download the podcast of The Deathless Pros performance.

Today I wanted to hear the first Lips song I'd ever heard. I decided to head over to the u-tube to get my fix, lucky for me they had a sweet live vid of the song. I'd also like to mention I didn't really like this song the first time around, now its one of my favorite songs ever. Top twenty material here, bah, scratch that I won't put a number on it, I like it ok?

2009 get ready I'm going to beat your ass down daily

Well today I couldn't decide what Flaming Lips song to write about or listen to so I picked up a bootleg, yes Warner Bros. I have a bootleg (or five) of theirs. The show was from the Fox Theater in Boulder, Colorado from March 19th of the year 2000.

My buddy Jordan came out to Colorado for a week and did a bunch of skiing and we went out and saw the Lips one night. The Fox is just a small place, a little bigger and better then the Zephyr that used to be the gem of SLC.

Looper was the opening act, they were way better live then recorded, I threw their album I bought at the show away shortly after listening to it. After Looper played we were standing around having a beer and Wayne Coyne was walking through the crowd, he looked at Jordan and I and said "Hey, thanks for coming out tonight, great to see you". That little sentence made my heart pound and put the biggest smile on my face. Nice guy, he walked away, we both just stood there smiling, the show kicked ass.

I need to see the Lips again.

Tonight on NASS - The Deathless Pros

You Can't Stop The Spring

When I woke up today I looked out my bedroom window, which was almost impossible to do since it was coated with snow. Nearly a foot of the white stuff fell overnight, not bad, it makes me want to make hot eggnog drinks all day and watch Bogart movies in the lounge.

As I peered out at the winter wonderland a song popped into my head. Yep, another Lips song. The first time I ever heard this song was back in '93, I'd bought Oh My Gawd!!! and copied it to tape so we could listen to it in Jayson's bus. We were driving from Big Cottonwood Canyon to Sugarhouse and we picked up a couple that were hitchhiking. That song came on as they got in the bus, we cranked it up and started laughing and acting strange to freak out the passengers. They weren't even phased by us and just busted out a bowl, can't remember their names, good kids, good kids.

The next 5 weeks are going to be good ones on the old Not A Side Show, Connery and I are booked solid with local bands:

December 27th: The Deathless Pros
January 3rd: Stereotype
January 10th: Tolchock Trio
January 17th: Cavedoll
January 24th: I<36335
January 31st: Big Gun Baby

Damn, last time I had shows planned this far into the future most of them canceled or just forgot to show up, I'm going to twitter all of them daily so they don't forget.

This month I've had more downloads of my podcasts then any other month. So far 85 different people have downloaded episodes of Not A Side Show, I'd like to break 100! So if you haven't checked out any of the shows, DO IT! I'll sweeten the pot, if you help me break the century mark I'll post 2 more casts before the end of the year!

The Merry Flaming Christmas Lips Blog

Hey Happy Xmas and all that everyone. I woke up this morning with a Flaming Lips song in my head. So I got outta bed, found The Soft Bulletin and gave it a listen. The song that was playing in my dream was The Gash, I hadn't listened to this song in a long time. I had to look up the lyrics because I knew there was a reason I had this playing in my dreams. Powerful song.

I remember the first time I saw them perform this song live. I was living in my boss's really nice 36 foot RV in Golden, Colorado August of 1999. My friend Weng went to the show with me, I'd heard that there was going to be some sort of music experiment going on at this show. When we arrived at the Ogden Theater in Denver we bought tickets then gave our ID's to a security guy who gave us a portable walkman radio with headphones. You were supposed to tune to 89.1 on the radio and listen to the show broadcast live in stereo. It was really cool, with or without the headphones, this was the first time I'd seen them without a live drummer, all the drum tracks were recorded, still cool show.

Earlier that year I'd traded some tapes of live shows from Salt Lake for an advanced copy of The Soft Bulletin, I received it a month or more before the release, and I hated the album on first listen. The night of the show, with all the visual effects I fell in love with the album. Suddenly everything had changed. I didn't buy the actual album till just a couple years ago when I'd finally worn the burnt disc out.

Check out the lyrics and watch some vids of the Lips, it always puts me in a great mood. Be safe out there this Holiday season kids!

This Saturday night on Not a Side Show I'll have The Deathless Pros playing live for your enjoyment so tune in at 10pm to 90.9 FM in Utah or krcl.org

Don't Miss This Show!

So I was at a KRCL meeting last night, we got the new ratings for the 2008 summer.  I was very curious to see just what kinda numbers I had out there.  They ran a comparison of the last two summers, turns out that last summer 2007 I had a HUGE following, my numbers were through the roof!  I was very pleased with that, but then I looked at 2008 summer and apparently I had ZERO listeners this summer!

I know, that's crazy right?  Zero listeners, I know I've got one or two listeners, shit you call me every week and request stupid shit that I say I'll play but never do... wait do you think that is why everyone stopped listening?  You'd think that since I just quit smoking and with this big zero cherry on top of my Sunday I'd have flipped out and puffed down a pack o' Crushes over night right?  WRONG!  Instead I had a nice bowl of Pho for dinner and asked Bad Brad to start teaching me how to play a one string guitar.

This is actually good news.  It means since nobody is listening that its still totally cool to listen to my show!  You aren't going to be hearing people at coffee shops talking about my show and saying stuff like "Not a Side Show used to be cool", or "I liked him better when nobody was listening to him", "He used to rock, what a sellout!", or my favorite "His music was better when all he played was songs that violated FCC regulations, I blame Janet Jackson."

Indulge people, swim in the vast ocean of NASS!

This weekend's show is going to be extra delicious, one of my favorite local bands will be playing around 10pm Rope or Bullets .  They played about 14 months ago and I've been begging them to come back ever since.  You my friend can be one of the only ones listening to the show, see if anyone at the coffee shop can beat that!
